Corrosion of reinforcing steel in concrete structure due to carbonation & chlorination, when exposed to chlorides, is a common occurrence. It is a complex phenomenon related to structural, physical, chemical and environmental considerations. Costs due to corrosion of reinforcement in concrete caused by carbonation & chlorination have been estimated at more than $2 billion per year in the world. For most situations, corrosion-inhibiting admixtures offer significant advantages over other protection methods to delay initiation of corrosion for the service life of the structure.
